Exhibition “Lill Tschudi – Franz Čižek. A delightful sort of game” opens tonight

Graphical Work of Lill Tschudi on Show for the first Time – Relationship to Franz Čižek

10.10.2023
The new exhibition Lill Tschudi – Franz Čižek. A delightful sort of game in the University Gallery of the University of Applied Arts Vienna will open tonight in the city center of Vienna. Lill Tschudi – Franz Čižek. A delightful sort of game explores relationships between artistic practice and teaching in the 20th century by bringing two figures in dialogue. The pivot of the exhibition is the graphical work of Swiss artist Lill Tschudi (1911–2004), which is shown for the first time in Austria as part of a cooperation between the Angewandte and the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zurich. This monographic perspective is furthermore expanded by exploring the relationship of Tschudi’s works to selected holdings from the collection of the University of Applied Arts Vienna that document the reform pedagogy of artist Franz Čižek (1865–1946).

This was Show Modeklasse 23

Sold-out Atrium was thrilled by 6 diploma collections – Grace Wales Bonner says goodbye

03.06.2023
The Show Modeklasse 23 in the sold-out atrium of the University of Applied Arts Vienna took place yesterday evening. The students thrilled the audience with their designs, which testified to the outstanding artistic and creative training of Modeklasse. Imogen Snell and Riccardo Castano from ISSTUDIO London were responsible for the art direction of the show for the second time. Live close-ups of the looks were broadcasted on a large screen in the middle of the atrium, as well as the bustle of the show backstage, giving the audience a multi-perspective view of the students' work.
Six students are graduating from the Fashion Department this year and their outstanding diploma collections are a testament to the explosive creativity that is fostered at the Angewandte. The final defilé was an impressive testimony to the expressive diversity of Modeklasse: The designs ranged from experimental to wearable, from sculptural ensembles to body-hugging silhouettes, carried by theatrical opulence, ironic distance or hopeful utopia. The outfits were worn by a diverse cast, for which Casting Director Kyra Sophie scouted new models in Vienna, celebrating diversity and body positivity.

University of Applied Arts Vienna: Show Modeklasse 2023 on 2 June 2023 presents six diploma collections

Sold out – Live stream / Documentation of cat walk and backstage on large screen

25.05.2023
This year the Show Modeklasse will take place for the third time on the premises of the University of Applied Arts. British fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner, head of the Fashion Department since 2020, has commissioned Imogen Snell and Riccardo Castano from ISSTUDIO London as creative directors of the show, as she did last year. While last year's show was accompanied by a classical symphony orchestra and the atrium of the Angewandte was transformed into an orchestra pit, this year the set design was inspired by the atmosphere of pop concerts. The catwalk and the backstage are documented live by several cameras and projected on a large screen. The photographs and video elements are taken by a number of students from the Department of Applied Photography and Time-Based Media, with whom Modeklasse is closely collaborating. The models casted by Kyra Sophie will parade to a soundscape produced exclusively for the show. Berlin-based movement director MJ Harper is responsible for the choreography. Those who couldn't get tickets for the sold-out show can tune in via live stream on Instagram (Instagram @modeklasse).

Orange The World. UN campaign to end violence against women

This year the focus lies on the responsibility of men - Men can end violence against women!

23.11.2022
Once again this year, the University of Applied Arts Vienna is participating in the important UN campaign Orange the World. 16 Days to end violence against women. Starting on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a strong signal shall be set until December 10, the International Human Rights Day. University of Applied Arts Vienna: Rector Bast rejects KSORS demand

24.10.2022
The "Coordinating Council of Organisations of Russian Compatriots" in Austria (KSORS) demanded that the Rector of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Gerald Bast, should remove or have removed a poster that students of his university had put up on the façade of the university building in Vordere Zollamtsstraße as part of an artistic intervention. The poster shows the text "RUSSIA IS A TERRORIST STATE". KSORS justifies its demand as follows: The content of the poster would "incite sedition in Austrian society" and "contradict the principles of university neutrality, impartiality and apoliticism".

The Rector of the Angewandte rejects KSORS' claim and speaks on behalf of the university:

- There can be no neutrality in matters of violation of international law. Not even, and especially not, for a university.
- In the framework of the last United Nations General Assembly, 143 UN states condemned the "illegal annexation" of Ukraine by the Russian Federation and declared it invalid. The UN resolution calls on Russia to reverse the annexation of the occupied territories.
- Russia's belligerent aggression against Ukraine is not only a violation of international law, but also - according to Human Rights Watch - a violation of the law of war.
- Russian authorities are prosecuting people who call Russia's belligerent aggression a war and not a "special operation".
- Individuals who have publicly demonstrated or protested against Russia's war of aggression in Russia are being detained by Russian police.

The University of Applied Arts Vienna stands in solidarity with the Russian people who have been and are being held hostage by the government of the Russian Federation for its aggression against the sovereign state of Ukraine in violation of international law.

University of Applied Arts Vienna demands consequences after the death of a 22-year-old art student in Tehran

After the death of Mahsa Amini, official Austria must not simply go back to business as usual in terms of foreign policy

21.09.2022
On behalf of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, rector, Gerald Bast, calls for an active protest of Austrian foreign policy leaders in order "not to simply go back to business as usual" after the death of Mahsa Amini. Last week, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was studying art in Tehran, had been arrested by the so-called “morality and religion police” because of her "un-Islamic" clothing and taken to a police station. She died in police custody in the Iranian capital. The tragic death of the art student caused and continues to cause protest and horror, concern, and shock both in Iran and around the world, as the circumstances of her death need o to be clarified and a strong suspicion rests on the Tehran police to be responsible for it.

Friedl Dicker-Brandeis. Werkstätten bildender Kunst

Exhibition in UAA Gallery

19.09.2022
Friedl Dicker Brandeis. Workshops for Visual Arts
The artistic work of Friedl Dicker-Brandeis (1898-1944) is marked by production across media, ranging from graphics and paintings to designs for costumes and stage sets, toys, interiors and modular furniture, through fabrics, bags, and book covers to politically engaged art. Throughout her short career she also worked as an art teacher – a practice she pursued even after she was deported to the concentration camp Terezín and up until her murder at Auschwitz in 1944. Dicker’s oeuvre emerges from her on-going professional engagement with a variety of environments and collaborations. Its complexity distinguishes her as an outstanding artist; however, she also belongs to a generation of women artists still only present at the margins of the received history of European Modernism.
There are various reasons for Dicker’s neglect and the prevailing reading of Dicker as merely the partner of the architect Franz Singer. Her gender, class, and ethnic identity have played just as large a role in this process of marginalization as has the material destruction of central parts of her rich architectural oeuvre – a destruction itself contingent upon her oppression as a socialist and her persecution as a Jew under the rise of fascism and the National Socialist regime. Still today, the engagement with her oeuvre requires to be continued.

Oskar Kokoschka Prize 2022 for Lawrence Weiner - Posthumous presentation of the prize to his widow in a festive setting.

Award by University of Applied Arts Vienna and Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research to outstanding conceptual artist

09.03.2022
The posthumous presentation of the 2022 Oskar Kokoschka Prize to the laureate's widow, Alice Weiner, took place yesterday evening at a ceremony. With Lawrence Weiner, an outstanding conceptual artist is being honored who, with his unmistakable formal language that oscillates between the poetic and the political, has also dealt with public space in a powerful way. "As bitter as it is that Lawrence Weiner, unfortunately, passed away on December 2, 2021, there remains the consolation - although a small one - that he was very pleased to receive the Oskar Kokoschka Prize in November 2021 and also expressed his joy about this award," explains the chairman of the jury and rector of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Gerald Bast, and continues, "I am very pleased that Mrs. Alice Weiner did not shy away from the journey from New York to Vienna to accept the prize in person."

23.11.2021
“The Oskar-Kokoschka-Award 2022 goes to the New York based artist Lawrence Weiner. On behalf of the jury I would like to cordially congratulate him”, announced jury chairman Gerald Bast, rector of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. “Lawrence Weiner, an outstanding conceptual artist active since the 1960s, is being honoured. With his unmistakable formal language, which oscillates between the poetic and the political, he has also dealt with public space in a powerful way. In particular through his impressive work Smashed to pieces (In the Still of the Night), which he conceived for the former Flakturm in the 6th district of Vienna and adapted for the façade of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, but also through his cooperation with the artist group Die Damen, he is closely connected to the city of Vienna. His work has been presented in numerous exhibitions in Vienna”, Bast quotes from the jury’s statement.

University of Applied Arts Vienna: Monica Bonvicini receives the Oskar Kokoschka Award 2020

10.01.2020
Presenting the prize to the artist on February 28, 2020 at the University of Applied Arts Vienna

“The Oskar Kokoschka Award 2020 goes to the Berlin based artist Monica Bonvicini. On behalf of the jury I would like to cordially congratulate Monica Bonvicini. I am very pleased to honor an artist who left deadlocked disciplines and media long ago and who always refers to socio-political conditions in her work”, announced jury chairman Gerald Bast, rector of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Bonvicinis artistic work is of high socio-political relevance and insistently invites to reflect upon social conditions. Monica Bonvicini applies different media such as sculpture, installation, video and photography in herwork – always crossing or leaving particular borders. In doing so she creates environments that make spacial developments and power structures accessible and tangible. Bonvicini questions the relationship of gender roles, power and control and discloses them. In her work, language is of vital importance, not only but also whilst using a dry sense of humour.
