Peer Review

The Angewandte uses the peer review as a method to support study programmes and the artistic-scientific organizational units (departments and institutes) responsible for them in broad processes of quality enhancement and organizational development. The central questions guiding the process are adapted to the respective situation with its concrete level of development and the resulting need for reflection and advice. A peer review looks into the implementation of the study programme and, depending on the specific development issues of the department, also considers to varying degrees of intensity the development of the associated research field.

National and in particular international experts from the respective fields are called in in order to arrive at professionally sound assessments and productive indications for further developments. New study programmes are subject to a mandatory peer review five years after their introduction, i.e. at a time when the first graduates of these programmes can be expected. In addition, artistic-scientific organizational units or study programmes can voluntarily undergo a peer review.

The procedures are carried out in cooperation with a recognized external quality assurance agency in order to ensure high procedural quality in accordance with international standards. To initiate an already scheduled peer review, the UQE contacts the artistic-scientific organizational unit concerned. In case of voluntary procedures, the artistic-scientific organizational unit that has an interest in the matter reaches out to UQE.

The UQE coordinates between the evaluated programme or organizational unit and the external quality assurance agency and acts as a supporting partner by providing information and advice, offering internal workshops and providing minutes if required, and reviewing reports in an advisory capacity.

After completion of a peer review, the department in question deals with the recommendations and reports on the findings to the rectorate in order to draw joint conclusions for further development of the study programme and the department.
