Graduation

Important information

General information

Specific requirements regarding the completion of a regular study programme can be found in the different tabs (at the top) – separated by artistic (including inter-/cross disciplinary) and scientific final projects.

If a board examination is not the final compulsory exam to be taken in order to finish a study program, it is the responsibility of the student to apply for conferment of their academic title after completing all requirements as laid down by the curriculum.

For the graduation from the art education programme, there is a specific guidance provided by the IKK.K institute.

Pre-requisites for receiving an academic degree

In addition to delivering the required course performance, the following steps have to be completed before the issuing of the graduation documents:

Declaration of consent

The declaration of consent is a prerequisite to be able to present and publish the final thesis/project.

Publication of the final thesis/project

Due to obligatory disclosure of the final thesis/project an upload (of the artistic as well as scientific components) via PHAIDRA is compulsory (optional for students of the programmes Architecture, Industrial Design Investigations and postgraduate programmes).

Restricted access to the final thesis/project
In case important legal or economic interests of the student are at risk through public access to the final thesis/project, in accordance with § 86 para. 4 of the Universities Act 2002 the prevention of the use of the final thesis/project may be requested at the Dean of Studies' office. The respective application form needs to be approved by the Dean of Studies BEFORE uploading the final thesis/project. Otherwise it is published irrevocably by the upload.
'Entlastungsbestätigung' of the library

The return of all borrowed items will be noted by the library. Even if you do not have any more items borrowed, please contact the library for the "Entlastungsbestätigung".

Statistik Austria

After successfully completing the online questionnaire you will receive a confirmation, which needs to be sent to the Office of Student Affairs via email (preferably as PDF).

Graduation certificates and graduation ceremony

The academic title will be awarded after fulfilling all pre-requisites. The issuing of the respective graduation documents might take some time due to the necessary signatures on the forms.

It contains:

  • Final transcript
  • Decree of receiving the academic title
  • Graduation certificate
  • Diploma Supplement
The formal awarding of the graduation certificate takes place at the next respective graduation ceremony (see Academic Calendar and Events). Participation is free, registration not necessary. All requirements or forms need to be completed at least one week before this date. If required, the documents can also be collected in advance.

Diploma Supplement

The Diploma Supplement (attachment to the diploma (sample)) is a standardised document in the context of the European Higher Education Area, to facilitate the recognition of individual qualifications. Together with the diploma, each graduate of the Angewandte receives a diploma supplement. It is free of charge and provided in German and English.

The Diploma Supplement contains:

  • Details of the type and qualification level of the diploma
  • Information about the study programme (admission requirement(s), programme details, grading scheme)

Final (inter-/cross-disciplinary) artistic project

General information

Artistic diploma or master programmes conclude with an artistic diploma or master project. In addition to an artistic component, there must also be a written component explaining the artistic one. The assessment takes place through a board examination.

Also, the bachelor programme TransArts as well as the bachelor and master programme Cross-Disciplinary Strategies require the assessment of a final thesis through a board examination.

Before the start of the final semester all required courses according to the curriculum need to be successfully completed, except those directly related to the graduation project.

Admission to a final (inter-/cross-disciplinary) artistic project is then subject to the confirmation of supervision by a topic-related supervisor.

Students of artistic master or diploma programmes can alternatively request to produce a scientific thesis as their final project.

Thesis (PhD in Art)

To complete a PhD in Art it is necessary to submit an artistic research project or several connected artistic projects in accordance with the research questions (artistic complex of work, groups of works). The research results must be suitably documented, contextualized, and reflected. The outcome of the artistic research project should be communicated comprehensibly.

The thesis consists of an artistic work, as well as a presentation – in the sense of a reflective documentation – of the gained insights. The doctoral student is given advice and support by a supervisor holding an artistic venia docendi.

The doctoral viva consists of:

  • completion of the courses regarding theory and practice of artistic research

  • completion of both internal and public colloquia

  • thesis and defensio: within the framework of an oral examination (defensio), PhD candidates will introduce themselves and present their thesis in form of a lecture. The thesis will subsequently be discussed with the members of the examination board

At the end of each semester a graduation ceremony takes place. Attendance is free of charge and requires registration at the Office of Student Affairs.

Scientific dissertation

Requirements

Doctoral students are permitted to register for the doctoral examination ("Rigorosum") when they have fulfilled the requirements determined by the curriculum. Registration requirements for the final examination include the positive completion of the prescribed courses and the positive assessment of the dissertation.

Application

In order to graduate from doctoral studies, it is necessary to submit an application for admission to the doctoral examination. This document and the corresponding application for the naming of the evaluator of a dissertation should be submitted to the Dean of Studies. External evaluators can be nominated in accordance with the Vice-Rector for Teaching.

All necessary forms can be found below. When the documents are approved, the dissertation assessment form will be sent to the respective evaluators.

In addition to the application for the doctoral examination, two bound copies of the dissertation have to be submitted to the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs.

Formal requirements for dissertations

All copies of the dissertation have to be bound with a laminated spine and a hard cover. First- and surname should be printed on the spine. It is recommended to design the first pages of the dissertation in accordance with the guidelines and to prepare abstracts in both German and English (max. 250 words each) and incorporate them into the work.

Date and procedure of the doctoral exam

The doctoral exam can take place two weeks after the submission of the application at the earliest. As part of the doctoral exam, the dissertation has to be defended in its scientific context in front of the examination senate. The examination senate includes those university professors who advised on or assessed the dissertation.

The candidates can agree upon a date, place, and time for the doctoral examination together with their advisor and secondary evaluator, and inform the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs who then invites the members of the examination senate.

Assessment and award of graduation certificates

The doctoral studies are completed upon positive assessment of the doctoral examination and the dissertation, which is then followed by the authorised award of the academic title by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs. At the end of each semester a graduation ceremony takes place. Attendance is free of charge and requires registration at the Office of Student Affairs.

What needs to be done for the plagiarism check?

Students will receive a link for the plagiarism check of their final project/thesis via Turnitin from the respective supervisor. Please follow the steps for the upload of your final project/thesis as explained there.

What happens if plagiarism is detected?

In case your own work is not sufficient because of plagiarism, your final project/thesis will be graded "Nicht genügend" (insufficient).
