Continuation of Studies

Basic information

Requirement for the continuation of studies is the timely payment of the Students' Union fee each semester and if required the payment of the tuition fee.

Given that all necessary contents have been delivered (e.g. the required performance record in the main artistic subject, see Courses) the automatic continuation of studies takes place upon payment of the Students' Union respectively the tuition fee. However, only at the university that receives the payment.

The study confirmation ("Studienbestätigung"), including the student record sheet ("Studienblatt") and the study period confirmation ("Fortsetzungsübersicht") is available via the Online-Service for Students. A proof of academic success ("Studienerfolgsbestätigung"), which serves as a document for social insurance and finance authorities, as well as for the application for extension of residency permits for foreign students, will is issued by the Office of Student Affairs.

If you are also registered at another Austrian university, the continuation needs to be completed separately.

If you pay your Students' Union/tuition fee at a different Austrian university you will be sent an email prior to each succeeding admission period containing a link to continue your studies at the Angewandte.

In case of loss of the student ID you have to present a report of loss - this can be done online through fundamt.gv.at (in German language) - or a report of theft from the police to the Office for Student's and Academic Affairs. Please make sure it includes specifically "student ID of the University of Applied Arts Vienna". For issuing the new student ID you again need to bring another valid ID as well as a suitable ID picture.

Completion of 1st study segment (for diploma programmes)

Provided all required ECTS points are fulfilled according to the respective curriculum, regular students of a diploma programme can complete the first study segment by submitting an application for admission to the first diploma exam to the Office of Student Affairs.

For students of the diploma programme Industrial Design Investigations the first diploma exam is a board examination. Additionally, two forms have to be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs:

Erasmus Outgoing

The International Office informs about all possibilities to participate in a one to two semester lasting exchange as an outgoing-student, see dieangewandte.at/ausland_en.

Participants of a mobility programme must continue being registered at the Angewandte during their time abroad, but they only have to pay the Austrian Students' Union fee.

  • If the mobility programme is coordinated by the Angewandte, the Office of Student and Academic Affairs will be informed by the International Office about the exchange.

  • If the mobility programme is not coordinated by the Angewandte it is necessary to present a confirmation about the mobility programme to the Office of Student and Academic Affairs within the admission period.

Leave of absence

An application for a leave of absence for a maximum of two semesters per occasion can be submitted to the Dean of Studies within the admission period for the following reasons:

  • military, training or civilian service
  • illness that hinders advancing in your studies
  • pregnancy
  • child care duties or other comparable care responsibilities
  • completing a voluntary social year
  • other reasons that severely hinder studying

In addition to the above-mentioned reasons a leave of absence can be applied for because of unpredictable and inevitable reasons ("force majeure") also during the course of the semester.

During your leave of absence you remain enrolled, although you are not permitted to attend courses, take examinations, or submit or have scientific/artistic work evaluated.

For further information about the leave of absence please contact the Office of the Dean of Studies.

Changing study programme

Within the Angewandte

Changing your study programme is only possible with a preceding entrance exam for the desired study programme.

Within the programmes of Fine Arts, Design, and Media Arts a change of major is possible and can be requested during the admission period by submitting the form for changing the field of studies. Additionally, the registration form has to be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs.
