New Professors

With the 2023/24 academic year, Angewandte is pleased to welcome ten new professors to join the faculty. Find out more about the new heads of the artistic-scientific departments with a short statement!

Sofia Bempeza, Kunst und Kommunikative Praxis

"The lynx’s tail is scratching the love pan. Posthumous creature is silent. Just follow its gestures, plant the words in your mouth, shallow all big theories, salivate your food, learn how to chew. Your sweat is a memory. Your production is cursed. Nothing is broken, except linearity. Unruly parts are not b-r-o-k-e-n. Tiny parts are broken, but no more comparisons. No bodyguards, just bodies defending dirty words, engine fluids, and water.", Sofia Bempeza

Annette Krauss, Kunst und Kommunikative Praxis

"No education and art without striving for social justice. I see myself committed to this heritage.", Annette Krauss

"We understand artistic practices, art education and art mediation as possibilities for controversial experiences of difference within teaching and learning processes. In doing so, we are not only concerned with unlearning habits of thinking, doing and perceiving, but also with shaping social and artistic processes with care. We continue to work on this in a situated and polyphonic way.", Sofia Bempeza und Annette Krauss

Ebba Fransén Waldhör, Textil – Freie, angewandte und experimentelle künstlerische Gestaltung

"We are all surrounded by textiles every day, but few know the processes behind their production. For me, the appropriation of textile practices and their knowledge systems means that we are empowered to understand and co-create the material culture that surrounds us. For this reason, I see the study of textiles as an essential component of education that can open up collaborative spaces. I am very much looking forward to further developing this field together with students and my new colleagues at the Angewandte.“, Ebba Fransén Waldhör

Craig Green, Modedesign

"It is a real honour to join the incredible team and students of the Fashion Department at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and I’m really looking forward to working closely with them over the next three years.", Craig Green

Petra Gruber, Baukonstruktion

"I am excited to join the I oA’s Department of Building Construction, and look forward to the opportunity to share experience, curiosity, and the courage to experiment.", Petra Gruber

Sam Jacobs, Architekturentwurf 3

"I am delighted to be joining the Institute of Architecture at the Angewandte. It's exciting to be joining an institution with such a rich history of radical and innovative design. I’m looking forward to developing the studio’s programme and to interdisciplinary conversations with students and colleagues.

It's exciting to think about how the school's recent interests can be developed in new ways to address architectures changing contexts technologically, culturally, socially and ecologically.

The studio will explore architecture as representation: How it represents (drawing); Who it represents (politics); What it represents (meaning).“
, Sam Jacobs

Boris Odehnal, Geometrie

"Geometry is the oldest and at the same time most modern science.

Geometries are in all things of everyday life.

You just have to get into the habit of seeing the world through the eyes of the geometer and you are immersed in a wonderful and beautiful cosmos."
, Boris Odehnal

UBERMORGEN – Liz Haas & Luzius Bernhard, Digitale Kunst

"If you don’t get help from us, please get help somewhere.“, Liz Haas & Luzius Bernhard

Marina Vishmidt, Kunsttheorie

"Art Theory as a research programme is often ascribed a certain indeterminacy - what is it actually about? Is it about applying knowledge generated elsewhere to contemporary art? My approach as a professor of art theory will be rather to deepen the transversality of this field and to show how art thinks philosophically, politically and economically within and about the conditions of a world to be remade.", Marina Vishmidt
