The Show Modeklasse
The Show Modeklasse was initiated in order to enable students to present their creations within the context of a professional fashion show. The most promising talents of the Fashion Department at Angewandte – the only Austrian institution offering a university-level diploma in the field of fashion design – show their collections that have been created under the guidance of internationally renowned fashion designer and professor of the department, Hussein Chalayan. The show has become one of the biggest and most demanded fashion shows in the country. It is widely known nationally as well as internationally not only among fashion experts and has achieved excellent reputation over the years.

New event location at the University’s domicile
For the first time the fashion show will take place at the University’s own building. Only recently, in October 2018, the brand new University building opened its doors to students, teachers and staff members, allowing the University to welcome guests in the impressive in-house event hall. Hosting the annual fashion show in its own premises has been a wish for many years and can be put into action now. Students of Studio Hani Rashid at the Angewandte’s Institute of Architecture are going to develop a visionary stage design for this years’ show.

Fashion design training with top professors
Since the early 1980s the direction of the fashion class has been held by international fashion stars in high demand such as Karl Lagerfeld, Jil Sander, Vivienne Westwood, Helmut Lang, Raf Simons, Viktor & Rolf, Bernhard Willhelm or – the present head of the class – Hussein Chalayan.
Graduates of the Fashion Department have gone on to create their own labels such as Sagan Vienna, Bless, GON, Petar Petrov, Ute Ploier oder Wendy Jim, have obtained top-level positions in the Austrian and international fashion business or with renowned fashion companies such as Balenciaga, COMME des GARÇONS, JW Anderson, Lanvin, Prada, Louis Vuitton, to name only a few.

Hussein Chalayan says goodbye after 5 years
The Show Modeklasse 19 will be the last show under the direction of Hussein Chalayan as the renowned fashion designer will say goodbye to Vienna at the end of this academic year. Throughout his five years of teaching, Chalayan accompanied and supervised his students with heart and blood and exactness, enthusiasm and passion.
Since the beginning of the 1980s, the chair of the Angewandte Fashion Department has been held by internationally renowned designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Jil Sander, Vivienne Westwood, Helmut Lang, Raf Simons, Viktor & Rolf, and Bernhard Willhelm, Chalayan’s predecessor.

Successful graduates
The Angewandte Fashion Department is proud of its graduates’ success who either start their own labels such as Bless, house of the very island’s, Petar Petrov, Sagan Vienna (formerly Bradaric Ohmae), Ute Ploier or Wendy Jim, or obtain top-level positions in the international fashion industry or with renowned fashion companies such as Acne Studios, Balenciaga, Burberry, COMME des GARÇONS, JW Anderson, Junya Watanabe, Kenzo, Lanvin, Prada, Louis Vuitton or Vetements, to name only a few.
