The Institute of Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna is an
academic teaching and research centre offering interdisciplinary practice across various fields of contemporary design. Artistic
creativity and scientific discourse play a formative role in shaping the relationship between the economy and society. The
application of theories, methods and skills to real-world problems, and their integration into the design of communication,
surfaces, objects and spaces, is closely interwoven with social and economic demands.
Teaching takes place within
diploma programmes, in which the departments are organised as ‘vertical studios’. Students from all semesters collaborate
on joint projects and engage in artistic practice and research. Upon successful completion of the diploma examination, graduates
are awarded the degree of Magister or Magistra.
Education at the institute is characterised by the transfer of
knowledge in small groups, close interaction between teaching staff and students, experimental approaches and freedom in project
selection, as well as workshops and lectures delivered by national and international experts.
The Institute of
Design is one of Europe’s leading design schools and contributes to Vienna’s role as a national and international centre of
design expertise.
