The University of Applied Arts Vienna is seeking a Software Engineer (m/f/d, 20 hours per week, unlimited contract), starting with September 1st, 2025 in the base department.

About us

We are a small, committed 6-member team that lives the open-source spirit and is always open to new ideas and solutions. We value open communication within a flat hierarchy.

Four of us identify as women, 5 of us are white, one person is Indian. Our expectations

·      Expertise and at least 3 years of experience in developing web applications

·       Experience with Python, Django, PostgreSQL and Django Rest Framework or similar Python Frameworks

·       Experience in developing and deploying RESTful APIs

·       Experience with Linux server environments

·       Experience with Docker

·       While this position is mainly for backend development, we expect also some experience with the architectural design of web applications, and a solid foundational knowledge of HTML, CSS and modern JavaScript

Nice to have

·       Knowledge of the OpenAPI Specification is an advantage for this job

·       Experience with Vue.js/Nuxt could be helpful

·       Experience in the area of Linked Open Data and Controlled Vocabularies could be helpful

·       Background knowledge on software architectures, networking and operating systems is an advantage for this job – (a computer science degree is not necessarily required, but rather a deeper insight into various layers of computing)

·       Basic understanding of IT security principles is an advantage for this job - (awareness of security aspects in programming and deployment)

What the job contains

·       Architectural design of new applications

·       Further development and updating of existing projects

·       Code reviews and team discussions about our coding guidelines

·       Continuous improvement of our development and deployment processes

·       Documentation of our projects for the wider open source community

·       Participation in planning meetings with our diverse users and stakeholders

How we work

·       We follow roughly a scrum-ish approach, with daily meetings and sprints, usually spanning 3 weeks.

·       The backend team (which you will be part of) has a weekly meeting as an open space to discuss issues that come up during the sprints, e.g. code or architecture style decisions.

·       At the end of each sprint we have an additional open space meeting or skill sharing session.

The monthly minimum wage for the position is currently € 2,019.50 gross (14 times a year, based on 20 hours per week) with the required minimum professional experience, with the willingness to significantly overpay with appropriate qualifications (IVa/R1, salary scheme for general university staff).
