TransArts - Michael Sailstorfer: TO THE PEOPLE

TransArts - Transdisciplinary Art

Since his studies with Olaf Metzel at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (1999 - 2005) and Goldsmiths College in London (2003 - 2004), Sailstorfer's sculptural practice has been based on the kinetic and minimalist (Pop) tradition of the 1960s and 1970s, enriched by inspirations from everyday or technical materials. By decontextualising and re-configuring them, the artist induces radical shifts in meaning. The artistic transformation of objects and spaces, not least through light, sound or smell, challenges physical boundaries and creates original images that often seem poetic. In addition, his works deal with natural forces and the question of how we perceive them through form and physical space. Sailstorfer's art is often characterised by a playful approach and visual wit.
His artworks are understood as precise responses to the attributes of the places for which they are conceived - be it the protected gallery or the public space. Through international residencies as well as a multitude of solo and group exhibitions and public art projects, the artist has gained international renown.

Home, travel, arrival, relationships - Sailstorfer is a surreal storyteller who addresses fundamental themes around our existence as individuals and is dedicated to the rediscovery of feeling in the art and objects of our time.

Michael Sailstorfer (*1979 in Velden, southern Germany) lives and works in Berlin.
