Elana Shapira | Cultural and design historian, project
leader of the Austrian Science Fund research project “Visionary Vienna: Design and Society 1918–1934” (2017-2022) at the Institute
of Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
She organized several International
Symposiums on Viennese modernism and émigré cultures. Shapira is the the author of Style and Seduction: Jewish Patrons and
Modern Architecture, and Design in Fin de Siècle Vienna(Brandeis University Press, 2016); editor of Design Dialogue: Jews,
Culture and Viennese Modernism (Böhlau, 2018) and Designing Transformation:jews and Cultural Identity in Central European
Modernism (Bloomsbury, 2021), and coeditor of Émigré Cultures in Design and Architecture (Bloosmbury, 2017) and Freud and
the Émigré (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020). Her forthcoming co-edited anthology is “Gestalteirnnen: Women, Design and Society”
(De Gruyter, 2023).
