Language Arts student shoots documentary film on the Austrian literary industry

A “press” film by Andor Sipos about the journey from manuscript to store shelf

19. January 2026
The film PRODUKT: BUCH sheds light on the Austrian literary scene and shows how books are written, published, printed, and sold along the value chain. A film by Andor Sipos.
What do publishers do with submitted debut manuscripts? Why is fiction hardly printed in Austria anymore? And how do authors earn money from books?
The daily newspaper “Die Presse” explores these questions in the feature-length documentary PRODUKT: BUCH (product:book), taking viewers behind the scenes of domestic book production.

The film was directed and edited by Andor Sipos, a student at the Institute for Language Arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Bettina Steiner, head of the “Presse” spectrum, accompanies viewers along the path of book creation and interviews Fiona Sironic, alumna of the Institute for Language Arts, among others. With her novel Am Samstag gehen die Mädchen in den Wald und jagen Sachen in die Luft (On Saturday, the girls go into the forest and blow things up), she made it onto the shortlist for the German Book Prize in 2025.

The film can be viewed on YouTube.
