Sam Jacob
appointed dean of the Institute of Architecture

Sam Jacob has been appointed new dean of the Institute of Architecture (I oA) at the University of Applied
Arts Vienna, effective April 15, following his nomination by the university’s rectorate.
Sam
Jacob joined the I oA in 2023 as a University Professor, leading Studio Sam Jacob, a role he will continue alongside
his London based practice. His appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the I oA, building on its reputation for critical
and forward-thinking architectural education.
He succeeds Baerbel Mueller, who served as Vice-Dean from 2020 to
2021 and as Dean since 2021. Baerbel will continue her work with [A]FA, the lab she founded at the I oA in 2011, where she
will focus on ongoing research and design projects.
Sam Jacob explores architecture as representation, his work
has been shown at institutions including the Art Institute Chicago, the MAK, the V&A, and the Venice Biennale where he
was co-curator of the British Pavilion in 2016. He has worked with renowned international museums, and has contributed to
events including the London Design Festival, the Chicago Architecture Biennial and the Lisbon Triennale. Sam Jacob was professor
of architecture at UIC and also taught at the University of Hong Kong, Yale, Karlsruhe HfG, ABK Stuttgart, TU Vienna and the
AA.
