The University of Applied Arts Vienna is seeking a Senior Scientist (m/f/d, 20 hours per week, fixed-term contract for 2 years) for the Department of History and Theory of Architecture, starting with October 1st, 2026.


History of Architecture

The field of architectural history imparts knowledge about the technical, aesthetic, and social aspects of intelligent and sustainable solutions for specific building projects within their respective historical contexts.


Theory of Architecture

The primary task of architectural theory is to develop critical thinking as part of the design process for architecture students. Theory plays a foundational role in the design curriculum by tracing the transformation of architectural ideas, articulating the links between specific examples and their social and cultural contexts, deepening the theoretical underpinnings of formal operations and by mapping how the field of architecture can expand in order to address contemporary questions and diverse audiences.


Employment requirement:

  • Completed master’s degree in architecture or related fields with a focus on architectural theory or architectural history


Applicants should have:

  • Experience in the field of architectural history and theory as demonstrated by curatorial, organizational, editorial, or academic work
  • Teaching experience is a plus
  • Excellent written and spoken English; knowledge of German is a plus
  • Competence in gender and diversity-sensitive issues
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team; ability to organize one’s own work


Teaching and research requirements:

  • Participation in courses offered by the department
  • Assistance in developing assignments and teaching materials
  • Leading discussion sessions and providing individual guidance to students
  • Contributing to the development of research activities with a focus on one of the following topics:
  1. Environmental history and theory; history and theory of the built environment, history and theory of representation and media in architecture; intersections between art and architecture
  2. Supporting department activities and events such as publications, exhibitions, and symposia
  • Organizing and facilitating department events (e.g., field trips, lectures, workshops)


The monthly minimum wage for the position is currently € 1,888.05 gross (14 times a year, based on 20 hours per week) and can be increased accordingly by taking into account job-specific previous experience in accordance with the collective agreement for universities (B1, salary scheme for academic/artistic university staff).
