“He helped to pull the shirt from his
arms; then he lay down on the bed of pain. While he was being bound, he spoke fervent prayers. He was given eleven blows of
the stick and spoke with an incomparable fortitude: ‘Jesus, Mary! Lord, come to my aid! My God, have mercy upon me!’ The inept
executioner broke only one of his legs and one of his arms. All other blows had no effect. When he was unbound and put onto
the wheel, the executioner wanted to braid him to the spokes, yet could not since his limbs were not broken. He tied him by
the stomach. The patient [the condemned] asked him not to push so hard, which he did. The patient then started to sing the
Veni Creator. Once he had finished the first verse, the spectators sang the second; the patient answered with the third verse,
and so on, until the end. After this, the patient sang the song L'Ave maris stella up to the end of the first verse; the spectators
sang the second verse, the patient the third, and so on, until the end. Then he asked the executioner to ask the crowd to
say the Miserere for him in Latin, while he recited it in French.”
