Roland Maurmair: NEW WORLD ORDER
Schauraum
An abstracted world map of transparent materials is the
focal point of the installation.
Each continent is anchored by strings and hangs displaced in
space. Motor-controlled cords pull at the panels of fabric and change their form and contour. As soon as sensors detect a
passing visitor the installation is set in motion. The presence of the observer brings the motors to a gradual standstill,
permitting a personalized viewing of the world map. An architecture of surfaces positioned in space that continually transform
the room through their movement. In the process, determined by the shifting locations and positions, new perspectives of the
world consistently emerge. New World Order is also an attempt to make us aware of how focused we are on electronic two-dimensional
surfaces and, thereby, lose sight of the world. Material in motion is an analogy to a flickering stream of images, its standstill
a homage to the moment.
