/ecm discourse 76: Book review New edition. Eva Sturm, "Im Engpass der Worte – Sprechen über moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst"

("In the Narrow Passage of words – Talking about modern and contemporary art")

A key work on art education theory has been republished, sadly posthumously. In her book Im Engpass der Worte (In the Narrow Passage of Words), Eva Sturm reflected in the 1990s on talking about and with art – a time of new approaches to education and a spirit of optimism in museums and art institutions. When we refer to it today, much of it seems astonishingly relevant, while other parts seem surprisingly forgotten. Some things may also mean something different to us now or promise something new in the narrow passage of words.

An event dedicated to exchange should focus on the significance of the book and what it can achieve today. The book has become a classic – what does the new edition mean for us today in concrete terms? How much space is there today for questions about what speaks through us and what leaves us speechless? For which practices in the present is the book relevant and how can it be updated? We asked 10 colleagues to give short statements on why the book was and is important to them, and then we will engage in a discussion.

Statements: Heiderose Hildebrand, Monika Holzer-Kernbichler, Andrea Hubin, Nora Landkammer, Hubert Lobnig, Karin Schneider, Sara Smidt, Nora Sternfeld, Markus Waitschacher, Andrea Zsutty
Moderation: Renate Höllwart und Beatrice Jaschke, /ecm-Leitungsteam
