LUDIC LUDIC SOIRÉE: Toys and the City - Urban Games Supported by Playful Objects
With Tamer Aslan and Philipp Ehmann
An event
of the Department of Experimental Game Cultures
Tamer Aslan and Philipp Ehmann explore public spaces and urban
areas through playful means. For the last ten years, their company City Games has created physical playful objects and games
that help facilitate this exploration for others. In this talk they will examine their design decisions, including physicality,
portability and magic - from physical urban gaming boards to scratch card treasure hunts to adventure games for regional development.
About the speakers:
Tamer
Aslan is a creative technologist and, as managing director of City Games, primarily responsible for the company’s
management. Philipp J. Ehmann is chiefly in charge of game and narrative design at the studio and is one
of its co-founders. Together, they make up two thirds of the company’s executive board.
City Games Vienna
is an urban and serious games studio and publisher, situated in the heart of Vienna. We make games that help our players explore
the city or specific topics of interest. We’re best known for our Monster Hunt games - an urban scratch-card-treasure-hunt,
in which players find monsters in their own (or a foreign) city and COW CHAT CRIME - a crime thriller on WhatsApp, as a serious
game about cows. We’ve also made games for Game City, BOKU, UN, BMWFW and others.
Tamer Aslan is a creative technologist,
as well as the head of City Games and mostly responsible for running the company.
Philipp J. Ehmann is mostly responsible
for game and narrative design at the studio, and also one of the co-founders.
Together they form 2/3rds of the
board of City Games.
