Lav Diaz, has been labelled “the ideological father of the New Philippine Cinema” by the Venice Film Festival. The Island Tides Initiative is fortuned to announce that we will be hosting the filmmaker for an entire week (Oct. 14th-17th) this fall in Vienna. During this week we derived a dense program of moderated screenings and workshops together with Diaz.

The second moderated screening of the event series is of the film “Mula sa Kung Ano ang Noon” (From What Is Before) on Wednesday, October 16th, at 17:00 at the Austrian Filmmuseum.

"Mula sa Kung Ano ang Noon" is a 2014 Philippine historical drama by Diaz that explores life in a rural village just before the declaration of Martial Law in 1972. Diaz masterfully blends intimate storytelling with a sweeping exploration of the country’s roots, moving beyond the Marcos dictatorship to uncover the deeper origins of societal fear and oppression. With its patient, novelistic pacing, the film offers a layered and haunting portrayal of a community on the brink of devastation.

Tickets for the Filmmuseum screenings are available at their regular prices but a limited amount of tickets can be discounted to 3€ if you pre-register with us at islandtides.initiative@uni-ak.ac.at.

For those interested in filmmaking and getting to know Lav Diaz’s artistic practice more intimately, there will be a workshop with him on October 15 & 17 at the Angewandte. These are limited places and require participants to commit to attend all four days (screenings included).
If you are interested, you can also register at the email above.

This event is in collaboration with the Austrian Filmmuseum and through the support of the Embassy of the Philippines in Austria and the Office of the Senator Loren Legarda.
