Hiesleitner, born in 1981 in Amstetten, studied sculpture and performative art with Monica Bonvicini at the Academy of Fine
Arts Vienna.
The exchange and cooperation with artists and researchers from various
disciplines is just as important for his artistic work as making art and culture accessible and tangible for a broad public.
Since 2005, he has been running the non-profit association "Kulturdrogerie", a former drugstore in Vienna's 18th district,
as an exhibition space.
In a world in which our social coexistence has been shaped by the pandemic and war in recent
years and will be put to the test more than ever by the global climate crisis, Markus Hiesleitner's works are astonishingly
topical and urgent. The supposed fragility of plant growth points to the actual fragility of our global socio-economic community.
