In this Sounding Research. Collective Listening Session an audio-visual
presentation of the book Ricarda Denzer – ganz ohr / all ears Audio Trouble, Para-Listening, and
Sounding Research (eds. R. Denzer & C. Höller, De Gruyter 12/2023) will take place.
Ricarda Denzer (artist, Vienna) presents an audiovisual essay about her new
book Ricarda Denzer – ganz ohr / all ear. Here, the practice of listening undergoes its own distinctive process of
settling upon a certain form.
Christian Höller (author and co-editor, Vienna),
gives the short lecture “Para-Listening as World Exploration.”
Karen Werner (sound
artist, Bergen) presents her “re – radio, a narrowcast,” which, like radio, is “constituted through a powerful relationship
between electricity and magnetism, as well as between senders and receivers.” Shawn Wilson says “relationships do not merely
shape reality, they are reality.” In the spirit of speaking nearby invoked in Ricarda Denzer’s ganz ohr / all ears,
“re – radio, a narrowcast” will engage with “relationality through sound, word, radio and spaces between us” (Werner).
Followed
by a conversation between editors Ricarda Denzer and Christian Höller, artist Karen
Werner, and graphic designer Hannah Sakai with curator Christiane Erharter.
Perceived
as continual processes, hearing and listening represent physical, performative acts or creative participation in the world
that fosters critical and care-driven agency, while seeking to enable alternative narrative modes. A process in which “something
that is not simply already in existence—whether separate or merged—enters into relationship, becomes relationship.”
Para-Listening, as one might call this reciprocal process between hearing and who or what is heard, therefore asserts
a constitutive element of tension, a “being-with,” encompassing myriad cross-references and defying any presumed subject–object
difference.
