The
ÆSR Lab is a sound research laboratory at the interface of
art and science that promotes interdisciplinary research and artistic design, supports the development and testing of new
technologies and provides infrastructure for research purposes. The focus of the ÆSR Lab is on topics in the field of experimental
sound research, such as machine learning, field recording methods, architectural sound design (spatialisation) or also the
reference to the physical world by means of sensors and actuators. At the same time, the interface from analogue to digital
is being researched via the conservation, restoration and digitisation of sound carriers. The ÆSR Lab will be implemented
over the next three years.
On three consecutive days in November, in addition to the ÆSR Lab project presentation,
lectures, panels and performances from the field of sound research will be presented. In parallel to lectures by researchers
from the three participating institutions, international positions from the field of sound studies will be represented. On
Monday, 13.11.2023,
Marcel Cobussen, editor of the
Journal for Sonic Studies (JSS) and professor
of auditory culture and music philosophy at
Leiden University, and a panel on Sound (Art) Research with composer
Katharina Klement, artist and researcher
Zara Julius, and
Bernhard Leitner,
former professor of the master class for cross-media art at the
Angewandte, will kick things off. The following day,
researcher & artist
Salomé Voegelin, who teaches at the
CRISAP Sound Art Research Centre at the University
of the Arts London, will enrich the programme with a keynote address.
The
ÆSR Lab is
a project of the
University of Applied Arts Vienna under the direction of
Karl Salzmann (Zentrum
Fokus Forschung). It is realised in cooperation with the Artistic Research Center (ARC) and the Institute for Composition,
Electroacoustics and Tonmeister:innen Training (IKE) of the mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (Director:
Thomas Grill) as well as the Phonogrammarchiv (PhA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Director:
Kerstin
Klenke). The ÆSR Lab is funded by the BMBF and in cooperation with the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) of
the EU.
The ÆSR Lab will open on
Monday, 13.11.2023 at 5 pm. Detailed information on the
