THIRD PLACE book launch: FOTOTECHNIKA – how female is photography?

THIRD PLACE is a series of events of the University Library and the Publication Department, University of Applied Arts Vienna

By and with Caroline Heider, Ruth Horak, Lisa Rastl and Claudia Rohrauer

Following our first joint publication Fotografie als Motiv, we now move on to the next round asking: is photography male? How does its history change when written from a female perspective? Is it at all possible to apply gender-specific language to photography?
Yes, it is! If tech-savvy female artists stage their working procedures as a performance, taking the camera fetish literally or re-reading specific self-help literature, and if photo-savvy female authors write an insightful context to go with it. An additional glance into media history reveals how the relationship between women and photography really was and which clichés have persisted until today.

FOTOTECHNIKA is both factual and sensual, offering art, theory and reflection. Lovers of photography will understand its techniques and processes.
