Online Artist Talk – department of DIGITAL ARTS/ Ruth Schnell
Maja
Smrekar talks on her interdisciplinary artistic research. Her practice has allowed her to lead strong collaborations in developing
productions that include cross-conceptual staging of hybrid art, installations, photography, drawing and video as well as
contributions to knowledge exchanged within lectures, talks and texts. She has been using her artistic voice to speak on ecofeminism,
inter-species relationships, technology and ideological structures in society. In her attempts to challenge the relations
with other than human entities, she has
been establishing contexts beyond the laws of genus and species or race
and gender, constructing situations that happen on a (micro-)political level and furthermore - on a molecular one.
Maja Smrekar was born 1978 in Slovenia. She graduated from the Sculpture Department
at The Academy of Fine Arts and Design and earned a Master’s Degree from the Department of New Media. Her projects explore
the potentials of technologically and scientifically rooted processes and materials, such as from biotechnology, molecular
biology, biomedicine, ecology, ethology, artificial intelligence, soft robotics, etc.
Her work has been established
in the international art and science milieu.Among others, she exhibited in the following spaces: ZKM Karlsruhe (Germany),
