Transarts - Ruth Beckermann: FORMEN DOKUMENTARISCHEN ARBEITENS

An event organised by TransArts - Transdisciplinary Art

Ruth Beckermann has been working as a documentary filmmaker for forty years; her name stands – far beyond the borders of Austria – for a cinema that is turned towards reality and immensely sensitive to politics. The film forms in which her politics of images manifest themselves are manifold: from "classical" approaches to essayistic time and space tapestries to artistic tiger leaps in which the documentary merges into the fictional.

Ruth Beckermann was born in Vienna, where she also spent her childhood. After studying journalism and art history and study visits to Tel Aviv and New York, she received her doctorate in 1977 from the University of Vienna. She worked as a journalist for various magazines in Austria and Switzerland. In 1978 she and two colleagues founded the distribution company filmladen, where she worked for seven years.

During this time she produced her first films and books. Since 1985 Ruth Beckermann has worked as a freelance author and filmmaker. Her films include "The Paper Bridge", "Beyond the War" and "American Passages". Her film "Die Geträumten" (2016) had great success at international festivals. At the Diagonale 2016 it was awarded best feature film and won five other prizes.

In 2018, "Waldheims Walzer" was awarded the "Glashütte-Original Prize" for best documentary at the Berlin Film Festival. In 2019, Ruth Beckermann created the installation "Joyful Joyce" for the Salzburg Festival.
