Lucie Stahl utilizes a flatbed scanner to create large-format images
in which various objects—magazine clippings, food, organic matter, detritus, as well as fluids of indistinct origin— appear
to emerge from a dark abyss. The resulting images are encased in epoxy resin, giving them a glossy, tactile finish and distinct
material presence. Stahl’s work plays with the notion of liquidity in its many forms—from finance to bodily fluids, and the
malleability of gender, identity, and images. In her work, the artist explores the allure and trappings of modern day consumer
culture, addressing addiction, dependency, and excess. In her lecture Restrictions Lucie Stahl talks about her works and exhibitions
of the past years.
Lucie Stahl (*1977 in Berlin) has had solo exhibitions at the Kunsthalle
Fri Art in Fribourg (2018), the Dallas Museum of Art (2016), the Halle für Kunst Lüneburg (2016), the Kölnischer Kunstverein
(2011, with Bela Kolarova), the Kunstverein Nürnberg (2009) as well as in various galleries. She participated in group exhibitions
at the Kunsthalle Basel (2017), the Berlin Biennale (2016), the Lyon Biennale (2015), the Sculpture Center in New York (2014),
and the Magasin in Grenoble (2014), among others.
