Richard Cockett: Vienna How the City of Ideas Created the Modern Times

Eine Kooperation mit dem Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (IWM)

How can one European capital be responsible for most of the West’s intellectual and cultural achievements in the twentieth century? Viennese ideas saturate the modern world. Every aspect of our history, science, and culture is in some way shaped by Vienna – the city of Freud, Wittgenstein, Mahler and Klimt.
Richard Cockett comes to Vienna and gives us the entirety of this extraordinary story. Tracing Vienna’s rich intellectual history from psychoanalysis to Reaganomics, Cockett encompasses everything from the socialist rebels of Red Vienna to the neoliberal economists of the Austrian School.

Richard Cockett is a journalist, historian and academic. He is currently a senior editor at The Economist newspaper and a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. He was previously a lecturer in history and politics at the University of London, and has written several books about British and world history.

Misha Glenny is the Rector of the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, one of Austria’s leading advanced research institutes. A former BBC Central Europe Correspondent who covered the revolutions in Eastern Europe and the wars in the former Yugoslavia, Misha is a sought-after keynote speaker on the geo-politics of cyber security and organised crime.
