Borjana Ventzislavova – Everything I wanted to ask Tati

An OFF_screen HYBRID Webinar

OFF_screen is an open format for discursive conversations about unfinished works in a cinematic context. The concept envisages the presentation of the work in its current stage and the discussion surrounding it as catalysts for a reflective engagement with that part of the moving-image production process which usually remains invisible. At the heart of the event is a specific question regarding a problem area that is blocking the creative process, which the filmmakers pose to the invited panel and the audience.
The guest artist and filmmaker Borjana Ventzislavova is currently working on her experimental documentary Everything I wanted to ask Tati (75 min).
The film experiments with various forms and combines text, sound, music and imagery in an unconventional way. The narrative style is fragmentary, yet it creates a coherent overall picture of the era – from the age of totalitarian communism through the transition to democracy and up to the present day – both emotionally and in terms of content.
Everything I Wanted to Ask Tati does not simply reconstruct memories, but places them in a new context and creates space for engaging with history and the spirit of a bygone era that continues to resonate to this day.

Film artist: Borjana Ventzislavova

About OFF-screen
Why not hold discussions about unfinished work? How about offering film and video makers the opportunity to discuss their stalled projects and the difficulties they face in the creative process? How might a successful, critical and constructive discussion take shape, from which everyone present could benefit?

The event centres on a specific question regarding a problem area that is blocking the creative process, which invited filmmakers put to the invited panel and the audience. The artist selects an unfinished video or film project that they wish to put up for discussion, or, where appropriate, an excerpt that is perceived as problematic or in need of clarification. They then formulate a specific question. The invited panellists receive the viewing link to the work and the question in advance, allowing them to prepare for the discussion.

The series was held from 2020 to 2022 in cooperation with the Blickle Kino / Belvedere21, represented by Claudia Slanar, and in collaboration with Amina Handke, and in 2024 with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna / Sabeth Buchmann.
