Urusla Reisenberger
is a theatre director, producer and writer based in Vienna, Austria. Her theatre work has been mainly site specific,
drawing from the history of a place as well as from the stories of its inhabitants, owners or users. This experience, together
with her ongoing research into the ritual roots of theatre (e.g. in India, Brazil or Hopi) has guided her interest towards
“presence” as a means of perception, reflection as well as action. In collaboration with visual artists Andrea Frank and Almut
Rink she has been exploring sustainability and non-anthropocentric models of subjectivity in the form of an ongoing arts based
research. As a teacher, she has been working with a wide variety of students: actors, artists, scientists and midwives among
others. (Austrian State Award of Excellency in Teaching 2017)
Wolfgang
Renner
has been working at the ‘Viennese Newspaper’, the world’s
oldest daily newspaper still published (1703), since 2007 and heads the ‘Viennese Newspaper Academy’. His work focuses on
collaborations from science, research and culture as well as the design of dialog events with renowned Austrian and European
partners. For many years he has been a lecturer at universities and colleges. He holds a master degree with a focus on communication
and management (WU Vienna) and studied communication sciences, journalism and philosophy at the University of Vienna. The
Academy of Journalism and Communication in Hanoi, Vietnam awarded him an honorary doctorate in communication sciences, the
first European to do so.

Presence as a Strategy of Exploration
Participants
of every walk of life, with or without artistic expertise, set out to explore “community” – a web of personal structures,
woven together in a pattern of time, space and experience …
The city of Venice will be our
vantage point – and the place of our research. After a brief introduction into body awareness, based upon the Polish theatre
revolutionary Jerzy Grotowski, the group will venture out into the city, using their own bodies as an instrument of perception,
reflection and action. Participants will contribute their readiness, alertness and playfulness to a collective process, leading
the group to insights into the nature of “community”. Mostly in silence, we will collect impressions and experiences, interacting
with the city and each other, our bodies slowly becoming part of a collective choreography. Presence, the conscious decision
to be here and now, will provide access to our collective creative potential as well as to unexpected discoveries and solutions

ART & MEDIA ETHICS
A windrose for art and media
Philosophy (Greek for ‚love of wisdom’) is the study of cognition and knowledge. A sub-discipline of it is ethics
and in the field of applied ethics media ethics is anchored. The subject of ethics is morality and the theory of action according
to the distinction
between good and evil.
Media ethics deals
with the morality of and in the media. Media are systemically relevant and have enormous social responsibility; they are the
fourth pillar of democracy. But the world of media has changed almost apocalyptically due to the Internet. If the fourth pillar
disappears, democracy will disappear. Media therefore need new allies, sources of inspiration for reflection and classification.
Art would be predestined to take on this role, because art, with all its manifestations, has always been a
moral protective force in humanism.
The goal of the workshop is to create a ‘windrose
for art and media’ that conveys courage for innovation and a pioneering spirit.

Martina Fröschl
Alfred Vendl
Fröschl studied media design and wrote
her thesis about computer- animated scientific visualizations of tomographic scanned microscopic organic entities. The depiction
of realities and biological phenomena has ever since driven her creations. Her
recent computer
animations are based on scientific imaging data and visual experimentation. Currently, she is a senior scientist at the Science
Visualization Lab Angewandte at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
Vendl is professor
emeritus and head of the Science Visualization Lab at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. He worked as a chemist and professor
at the Vienna University of Technology, the Imperial College London, the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, the University
of California San Diego La Jolla, the Max Planck Institute Stuttgart and the University of Applied Arts Vienna. He has worked
as a cameraman, screenwriter, director, producer and presenter on more than 200 main evening documentaries.
Workshop/Screening
Expeditions to Hidden Worlds
The visualization of the multiple problems humankind faces today is often the key to understanding
and awareness. The Science Visualization Lab at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria, specializes in making invisible
scientific phenomena visible using scientific imaging and datasets to enable art and science visual thinking, education and
communication. Collaboration is very important for the projects of the interdisciplinary lab.
In
the workshop, insights into the creation processes of computer-animated scientific visualizations which led to internationally
exhibited or screened projects and are typical for the work of the lab are given. Interested participants might be able to
create a visual data artifact.

Open Stage Discussion on Art and Media Ethics, Visual Competences

The open stage workshop is a pre-event to the Opera Aperta
Streams. It acts as a platform for a vivid and progressive format of reflection and discussion.
The
open space workshop will be moderated and will apply methods from “the art of hosting” in a “bar-camp” framework. The participants
are invited to discuss the topic “Art and Digital Humanism“ with invited experts from inter- and transdisciplinary fields
(stakeholders, artists, scientists, curators, and organizers). Curated questions from the discussion will fuel the Opera Aperta
Stream in the evening. Besides that, the outcomes of the discussion will also be published in a dossier of the Wiener Zeitung.

Opera Aperta Streams are panel-discussions
