The premiere of the SHOW MODEKLASSE
19 staged in the University’s own building for the first time is being accompanied by other news: A brand new magazine – „Arachne
– An Almanac on Clothing and Culture“ – will be published in the Edition Angewandte and will be presented directly from the
printing press at the fashion show. At the same time a fare-well will take place as the head of the class, Hussein Chalayan,
will leave Die Angewandte at the end of this academic year. As every year the graduates will not only show their designs and
outfits at the SHOW MODEKLASSE 19 but also present their works to an international jury of experts. And, last but not least,
the donated awards and prizes for the students and their work will be announced during the fashion show.
„Arachne – An Almanac on Clothing and Culture“Young, unconventional positions of fashion design
from Vienna and a connection between fashion, intellectual sensibility and an extraordinary visual language will characterize
this new almanac. Furthermore, the new magazine will give insight in the creative work of the fashion department at the Angewandte.
The name of the magazine refers to the figure of the greek mythology: Arachne was a talented mortal weaver who challenged
Athena, goddess of wisdom and crafts, to a weaving contest; this hubris resulted in her being transformed into a spider.

International jury 2019The eight graduates – more precisely the seven diploma students and one exchange student of the partner University OTAGO
Polytechnic, Dunedin, New Zealand – will present their diploma collection to an international extern jury, in addition to
the intern diploma jury at the University. This gives the graduates the possibility of feed back and judgement on their work
by high profile experts. The members of the jury 2019 are Tim Blanks, Editor-at-Large at The Business of Fashion, Stavros
Karelis, Founder & Buying Director of MACHINE-A, Britta Song, Commercial Director & Business Developer at RAF SIMONS
and Stefan Zeisler, creative director of the KHM-Museumsverband.
Premiere at University’s own buildingThis year the Show Modeklasse will be staged for the first time at the University’s own building. The new building has been
open since October 2018 and allows the University to welcome guests to the brand new in-house event hall. To host the fashion
show in its own building has been a desire for many years which can now be accomplished. A few students of Studio Hani Rashid
at the Angewandte’s Institute of Architecture are responsible for the stage design for this years’s show.
Hussein Chalayan
takes leave after five years
The Show Modeklasse 19 will be the last one under the direction of Hussein Chalayan as the
renowed fashion designer will be saying goodbye to Vienna at the end of this academic year. Through five years of teaching
Chalayan has accompanied and supervised his students with heart and soul, great precision, enthusiasm and passion. An international
appointment procedure for the professorship at the University is going on and not yet concluded.
240 Outfits
in two live showsBecause of the great attraction to the public there will be two shows to allow as many interested
people as possible to see the fashion show. At 6.30 p.m. and at 8.30 p.m. the approximately 240 outfits designed by 34 young
fashion designers will be staged.
