Full ttitle: Microscopy brings it to light: mortar technologies in Ephesos studied by polarizing microscopy and SEM Abstract: Microscopic and micro-analytical techniques provided the group of methods to analyze historic mortars of Ephesos. These powerful tools helped to answer questions regarding identifying the raw materials used to produce binder and mortar, how they were processed (e.g. lime burning and slaking, mortar preparation), then applied; a task made more complicated by alteration due to aging. The structural mortars exhibit a wide variety of interesting phenomena related to hydraulicity, while the decorative mortars reveal continuity spanning from Hellenistic to late Imperial times. The contribution aims to illustrate the potential of microscopy for analysis of ancient mortars in general.
