On April 9, 2019 Ingeborg Reichle will give a talk on New Media Ecologies: Rethinking the human microbiome in art and design at the Department of Visual Arts, University of California, San Diego, by invitation of Pinar Yoldas, where she is active as assistant professor. Pinar Yoldas is an infradisciplinary designer/artist/researcher, who develops her work within biological sciences and digital technologies through architectural installations, kinetic sculpture, sound, video and drawing with a focus on post-humanism, eco-nihilism, anthropocene and feminist technoscience. In her guest talk Ingeborg Reichle will introduce two current artistic positions referring to biomes – particularly to human microbiomes – as distinct biological communities, which can be regarded as a the collection of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that are present on a human body. She will present the art project FIFTY PERCENT HUMAN by the Austrian artist Sonja Bäumel who is based at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and the project Laundromat: Bioreceptive wash and dry by the Austrian / Columbian designer Isabel Prade, based at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna using strategies from the field of speculative design to ask questions about present and potential futures. Both projects are searching for a critical and innovative visual language, which will be able to carefully balancing our imagination about human-microbe interaction and the great diversity of the human body’s ecosystem, by using artistic and philosophical research tools, or by placing speculative design interventions into our everyday live routine.
