|In capitalist economies, money itself is fertile. Goethe’s Faust challenged the dry fertility of paper money long ago, and
the aspect of a “biological finance” was pursued to explore the proximity of biological to economic reproductivity in Shakespeare’s
Timon of Athens.
As such, the production of commodities and the human body are subject to mutual regulation. The commodities guarantee a fictitious
unity between themselves and the bodies, but this unity is fragile. In Microbial keywording it becomes a grotesque physical
act of value-creation.
The performance refers to the fact that in money-directed economies our phonetic repertoire, the lubricant of poetics, decreases
in favor of informal language, as does the diversity of the microbial soup in our mouth. Microbial keywording asks whether
we run dry just to meet capitalist standards of money, language and antibiotics? Or which assets would foster ecological
These fields are interwoven in an apparently futile round dance, where the speaking mouth meanders with detours towards the
anus. Fragments of academic lectures are repeated in the basement as phonemes until the speaker’s oral flora changes its
fertility by an alterated acid-base balance of the speaker’s saliva. This oral flora is subsequently grown in bioreactors
with the aim of making it memorable through the influx of sexual scent—rhythmicised by phonemes repeated from the audience’s
memory. The resulting ability of the mouth’s microbes to memorise is then inserted into a probiotic suppository and auctioned
off—as the ultimate act of capitalistic bargaining for life with money.
Having become a pharmacon in Microbial keywording, the keywords are absorbed as probiotics by the body and claimed as an object
of value, even of exchange, as a sign and a bearer of value — as a living currency. Can the recipient preserve their dignity
— only b e c a u s e they now fulfil the function of a commodity and of money?
