Negotiating an Architecture of the non-binary
architecture, non-binary, Roma, Environment
Not yet defined investigates a non-biased-non-binary inclusive body culture in a socio-cultural context that is dominated by gender separating beliefs and attitudes. The project is deeply linked within the complex ritualistic ideas of cleanliness (zuzo) and uncleanliness (mahrime) in the Roma Community. Further, the project examines the political, aesthetic possibilities that recycled and repurposed materials can have. The Intervention is a proposal for a set of interventions that are located around the settlement of Pata Rat. Penetrating the Landscape. The interventions are comfortably elevated, leading the citizens out of the settlements, allowing the view over their own landscape. The number of interventions will grow over time, they are base around daily rituals. The cleaning of cloths, the washing, the ritualistic aspect of water in the everyday. , Spatial Description The intervention will be set in the valleys around Pata Rat. Elevated on the landscape. The intervention will link geographic positions and create a network of usage of the settlement. The interventions are comfortably elevated, leading the citizens out of the settlements, allowing the view over their own landscape. To create this psychological calming effect of looking down to something and making sense of this that is being looked at. Bodies That will be built over time, that involve daily needs and functions that are based around routines that deal around water. _ The structure of the intervention: Artefacts made of steel and reinforcement bars are being placed on site, they serve as collectors for the waste. When these vessels are full, in the warm season, they are being covered with concrete mat-sheets that are being watered and hardened. Inside Plastic water pipes are located, that lead water outside. _ The spatial formulations try not to dictate how the interaction is going to happen. The body is to seek for affects, that are being triggered by the architecture. The Elements try to be multidirectional, allowing different adaptability of the body of each direction. _ Rainwater takes a 6 kilometer skydive. On its descent through the urban atmosphere it absorbs particulate pollution, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. This tainted rainwater spills off the roofs of the University buildings and funnels through a collection system for reuse. Shift from being consumers of water to stewards of water. re-envision an urban water infrastructure that invokes public participation. Concrete is being put on the elements in a communal effort. The concrete is being used to build step like constructions, able to reach higher points of the constructions. Over the years, an open water vessel will be closed. _ The floor plan.
In the North the vessel for the collection of water is place. Leading water further into a spatial system that is comparable with a person`s hand. When the Water is being transported from the palm into the fingers. At the palm is the water collector, that direct water further, through enclosed spaces. Where persons will be intimate, cleaning will take place there in an intimate environment. Further being led outside, where outdoor water basins are located, that are filled with plants and vegetations. Being naked in the smallest enclosure, with the bathing in the enclosure, watering the outside creates a cofunction, the private benefits the exterior. I call this privately entangled. _ Moisture, the heat of the enclosure, sensual arousal by the touch of skin on soft, rough surfaces in a save and private setting, where daily routine is being held. The project consists of “soft spaces", with curvatures that allow the body to prevail in positions that constantly shift between leaning, standing, lie and sitting. The material qualities are seducing and orienting towards an affect oriented experience for all Species in charge. The surface inside I am calling Guidingly Pulsating, where differences in haptics lead to explore surface qualities and inviting the body for interaction. _ The bodies will be covered with metal sheet roofs, that are being produced by the community in a communal effort. Similar to the working method of the Gothic Cathedral, the building process is adopted to the seasons. In summer the concrete is being poured, in winter the metal sheet ornaments are being crafted. Allowing the public realm to shift between private residential units and the landscape. Ornaments will be negotiated, by craftmen. They will be carefully crafted but the enclosure celebrates the mistake the imperfect, the process of production. _ Same with the haptic of the concrete outside, being applied, like clay. I call this homogeneously contrasted. The nuances in changes of surface quality leads to explore the interventions, while from distance it feels homogenous. — Vessels of water, use the recreation process of natural streams. Where plants, mushrooms, biofilms, sand, activated carbon, molluscs, and bacteria, purify the water, before it spreads in a non harmful way into the environment. Water will not fall beneath the streets like garbage into landfills. Rather, water will flow down the drain, undergo organic filtration.
