More robust printing technology, a significantly lowered financial entry level for the acquisition of the required hardware and a wider range of available materials made contemporary Rapid Prototyping technology a common member of the architectural work pipeline, within the last years . Yet, this practice, if at all, rarely has been applied to inflatable elements. The Connex500™ technology, a recent innovation by Objet Geometries Ltd. (www.objet.com) creates models that contain different mechanical and physical material properties in a single build process. The machine simultaneously prints from two source model materials and creates 21 interpolated types of Digital Materials that contain specifically addressable physical properties as tensile and flexural strength or modulus of elasticity. The control of CAD driven manufacturing processes can be used to address local changes in a component´s definition that alter its material organisationa and structural behaviour, subsequently manipulating its performance over time and place. The paper focuses on the application of this new material technology to develope dynamic pressurized components as building parts. The further discussed examples must be seen in the context of architectural design.
