TRADERS. Negotiating public space #1 Kick-off symposium on 26th of February 2014, 1 pm at Z33 - Hasselt, Belgium www.tr-aders.eu 'TRADERS' ('Training Art and Design Researchers in Participation for Public Space') is a European project (FP7, Marie Curie Actions, Multi-ITN), initiated by MAD-Faculty/LUCA (KHLim/KULeuven). The project starts from the premise or fact that artist and designers are often not trained in collaborating with stakeholders (such as policy makers or citizens) in public space projects. Nevertheless, artists and designers can play interesting roles in these projects, albeit they work together with other stakeholders. Therefore, TRADERS offers a training program for art and design researchers to (further) develop their collaboration skills. Six international researchers in art and design will explore specific methods that artists and designers can apply in public (space) contexts, which call for collaboration. The researchers will implement these methods in the Limburg Unie Hasselt-Genk project, which reflects on the connection between the cities of Hasselt and Genk (both literally and metaphorically). For instance, designer Pablo Calderón Salazar explores how a mobile market stall can be an instrument for designers to engage in discussions about public space (for example, about the integration of hospitals in the cities of Hasselt and Genk (and their roles) or about the construction of a rail connection between the two cities) with citizens, policy makers and private partners.
