The upcoming exhibition at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Vienna presents several charcoal drawings inspired by well-known meteorites from Mexico. These works are to be presented within an expansive installation, centering around a wall, visually akin to a border wall or barrier. The intention of this juxtaposition lies in the portrayal of meteorites as “Legal Aliens”, a play on the rather derogatory term “illegal alien” that is often used by the US media to describe individuals who have unlawfully crossed a border. As meteorites are named and associated with the geographical location, in which they land, they are basically assigned a national identity, although they originate from a place that is incredibly distant from our planet. The exhibition is extended through audio compositions that were created in cooperation with the Fonoteca Nacional de Mexico in Mexico City. The show and the particular installation, seeks to address current global events, inviting viewers to reflect upon displacement, identity and belonging.
