General Information
Doctoral students are permitted to register for the doctoral examination (Rigorosum) when they have fulfilled the requirements
stipulated in the curriculum. Registration requirements for the final examination include the positive completion of the prescribed
courses and the positive assessment of the dissertation.
In order to graduate from doctoral studies, it is necessary to submit an application for admission to the doctoral examination. This document and the corresponding application for the naming of the assessors of a dissertation are available in the office of Student and Academic Affairs (External assessors can be nominated in accordance to the Vice-Rector
for Teaching). Both documents are to be submitted to the office of the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs (Mrs. Rosenmeier,
Aktsaal). When the documents are approved, the dissertation assessment form is sent to the named assessors.
In addition to the application for the doctoral examination, two bound copies of the dissertation are to be submitted to the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs.
The doctoral examination can take place two weeks after the submission of the application at the earliest. In the framework
of the doctoral examination, the dissertation is to be defended in its scientific context before the examination senate. The
examination senate includes those university professors who advised or assessed the dissertation.
The candidates can agree upon a date, place, and time for the doctoral examination together with their advisor and secondary
assessor, and inform the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, who will then invite the members of the examination senate.
The doctoral studies are completed upon positive assessment of the doctoral examination and the dissertation, which is then
followed by the authorised award of the academic title by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs.
At the end of each semester, a festive promotion ceremony is held. Participation is free upon registration in the office of
Student and Academic Affairs.
Formal requirements for dissertations

spine. It is recommended to design the first pages of the dissertation in accordance with the Guidelines (see "Links and Downloads"
section) and to prepare abstracts in both German and English (max. 250 words each), which are incorporated into the work.
Additionally, all media borrowed from the library must be returned after the final doctoral examination.
Together with the diploma, each graduate receives a diploma supplement. The Diploma Supplement is a standardised document

An example of the Diploma Supplement can be found to the right of this page (in the field "Information") or here.
