The University of Applied Arts Vienna intends to establish a department with a professorship in
the area of transcultural studies. The department aims at opening up access, critical for research and teaching, to current
socio-cultural topics that are fought over on many fronts. The department is also to act as a link to postcolonial and decolonial
perspectives. The idea is to teach a sound approach that reaches beyond national, social, and cultural relations along existing
borders, and at the same time to open up current political possibilities for action in connection with scientific and artistic
disciplines by recollecting the universal values of enlightenment.
Thus, the new department of Transcultural Studies
will seek to raise awareness for an appreciative approach to diversity, for the regard of the dynamics of transcultural processes,
and for the critical discourse with power structures.
In addition, the new department is to also establish cross-connections
to the already existing research fields at the Angewandte and develop a range of courses for all students.
