Architecture as a basis of life plays a decisive
role within the rapid transformations taking place in society. Thus, the first and foremost tasks of a design studio are to
identify the diverse manifestations of our habitat, understand the developments, and create mechanisms and strategies for
a responsible future.
In this approach “context” is a central concept in the teaching and research
activities of the studio, which is investigated and discussed in its many facets. Architecture is conceived as contextually
referenced and should attain a responsible propagation of these qualities on the basis of carefully derived principles. Students
examine the meaning of the term sustainability in the broadest sense, both in cultural as well as societal terms. The contextual
reference comprises diverse scales, the relationship between body and space, the denotations and connotations of tectonic
elements and factors, and the urban fabric as well. Furthermore, work is focused on a constant extension and renewal of the
notion of architecture in order to develop specific feedback mechanisms on society for regenerative processes.
Students and teachers complement one another in the exchange of different perspectives, approaches, and experiences and
work together on the continuous advancement of architectural contents, both in terms of the tasks required from society and
the conceptual, formal, and methodological means of accomplishing the tasks. Students are encouraged to rethink and redefine
the contemporary role of the architect in order to shape the future of architecture and further the constant development of
The studio is also a node and an engine in a network of international institutions with the
same high standards, stimulating and promoting exchange with qualified experts in the field.
