REAL FICTION - 3 dates in May: Presentations & conversations about design
May is the perfect time to think idealistically and ideologically about design. The Institute of Design di Angewandte has invited six designers who use multiple methods and practises, crossing between education, research and design business, to contribute to a discussion about imagination, experimentation and cultural practice. Can design infect reality? Can imagination be influential as an instigator of change?
3rd May: Konstantin Grcic & Eva Rucki (Troika )
Konstantin Grcic (*1965) was trained as a cabinet maker at The John Makepeace School (Dorset, England) before studying Design at the Royal College of Art in London.
Since setting up his own practice Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design (KGID) in Munich in 1991, he has developed furniture, products and lighting for some of the leading companies in the design field.
Troika is a London based studio founded by Eva Rucki, Conny Freyer and Sebastien Noel who are widely known for their experimental practise, sculptures, installations and projects that provoke and employ a cross-disciplinary approach and intersect between design, architecture, and contemporary installation.
11th May: Rosario Hurtado (El Ultimo Grito) & Daniel Charny ( From Now On, curator of Power of Making at V&A)
El Ultimo Grito is the creative partnership of Rosario Hurtado and Roberto Feo. Founded in 1997 in London. El Ultimo Gritos work continuously researches our relationships with objects and culture, exploring them across disciplines in a wide variety of projects which range from interiors to graphics. Their work has been widely published, awarded and exhibited in temporary and permanent design collections. www.eugstudio.com/
Daniel Charny is an independent curator, co-founder of creative projects consultancy From Now On and Senior Tutor at the Royal College of Art. Between 2002-2010 he was the founding curator of the Aram Gallery for experimental and new design. From Now On are Content and Interpretation Consultants to the Design Museum London. He recently curated the hugely successful Power of Making exhibition at the V&A, London.
31st May: Clive Van Heerden (VHM Design Futures/Philips Design Probes) & James Auger (Auger Loizeau)
Clive van Heerden has recently established VHM Design Futures, a London based partnership with Jack Mama. Before this he was Senior Director of Design-Led Innovation at Philips Design. One of his main responsibilities in this role was leading the Probes program, which consisted of 'far-future' research initiatives that aimed at identifying long-term systemic shifts and anticipating changes in future lifestyles. Examples of Probes projects include Electronic Tattoo, Emotional sensing Dresses and Microbial Home.
James Auger is a partner in the Speculative Design practice Auger-Loizeau whose projects have been published and exhibited internationally, He has worked closely with many scientific and technological research Labs, as a Research Associate at Media Lab Europe(2002-205), with Philips Design, His Phd research is funded by Microsoft Research Labs, Cambridge.
